After a brief stint as a sports coach I began my commercial life as a sales representative for Ansett, later to become TNT. A few years later saw me in management. In those days it was customary for sales mangers to sit in their office and yell at sales people to perform better. So of course I followed in management as I had been managed. After a couple of years of adopting this type o approach two things happened almost simultaneously - one, I came to the conclusion that my management style wasn’t working and two, I met a fellow by the name of John Kerr. In short, Johns influence saw me going back to the studies I had completed in my sporting time. With his help I reinvented myself to be a manager who coached his team towards improved performances. Both I and my team found this to be a truly rewarding experience. The results far outstripped anything the team had been doing before. The environment changed from one of stress and confrontation to one of cooperation, shared values and supporting one another.
After TNT I was head hunted to Federal Express as senior manager sales and customer service Australasia. Federal Express or Fedex as it’s now known is a company where the whole culture is about coaching and supporting. Only thorough coaching and supporting one’s team while they learn and adapt to new ideas will you as a manager get the results you need to be successful. A long term saying of mine is that "we as managers quite often get the results we deserve" simply because we don’t support our teams.
I am, with Peter and Chris exceptionally proud of what we at Prosell have been able to achieve for our customers.
